The best work of July: recovery of a precious marble in a beautiful b&b in Florence

13 September 2019

This month, our journey takes us to an extraordinary destination: the Boutique Hotel Residenza d’Epoca – B&B in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, a historic building that exudes unparalleled charm. This ancient residence is located in one of the most charming squares in Italy. The majestic rooms of the Residenza d’Epoca’s hotel have been the fulcrum of a meticulous and demanding restoration project, aimed at bringing to light the beauty and uniqueness of the polychrome marble used for the walls and floors of the bathrooms. Before the surgery, these marbles were matted and stained due to the action of acidic substances. Marble, although known for its solidity and durability, is also notoriously fragile and requires special care to maintain its brightness and natural beauty. In this article, we will take you through every step of this fascinating restoration project, revealing how a team of experts has returned life to these stained marbles and achieved outstanding results.

The location: Residenza d’Epoca

The Residenza d’Epoca is a real jewel set in the heart of Florence. From its windows, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of some of the most iconic places of the city, including Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, Loggia dei Lanzi, Cathedral Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Badia Fiorentina and the Bargello Museum. The entrance to the residence is an enveloping experience, with frescoes dating back to the 15th and 18th centuries, which give the environment an aura of refinement and timeless elegance. In this magical and timeless place, the skilled team of artisans of the company DELTA APPLICAZIONI SPECIALI of Quarrata (PT) has intervened with great pride and pleasure to recover and clean the stained marble of the luxurious bathrooms of the residence. Every step of the intervention, from restoration to protection, has been managed with the utmost attention to detail. After completion of the work, the company provided detailed instructions to the cleaning staff to ensure the maintenance and preservation of the beauty of the marbles, considering the importance of these materials.

How to clean marble from acid stains: all the phases of the intervention

Initially, before facing the task of removing acid stains and dirt from various marble surfaces, the artisans performed a thorough washing using UNIPUL, a concentrated detergent with extremely powerful action. This cleaner is ideal for cleaning hard surfaces such as cotto, stone, cement, wood, ceramic materials, metal, glass and synthetic surfaces. Once the entire surface had been thoroughly cleaned and dried, the areas most affected by the acid stains were grouted and sanded to restore the original workmanship of the marbles. The PAD PRELUX from Marbec, a multi-grain diamond disc perfect for natural stone surfaces such as marble, travertine, granite, as well as for porcelain tiles, cement, grit and composite materials, was used for uniform sanding. Thanks to the action of the diamond, which is directly embedded in the support with a thickness of 3-4mm, the PRELUX allows to remove opacity, corrosion and light scratches, uniforming the surface and the degree of finishing. At this point, the clean and perfectly polished marble required adequate protection. Once clean and completely dry, the GUARD product was applied over the entire surface. GUARD is a water-based stain protection, ideal for low-porosity compact stones such as marbles, granites and polished internal terrazzo. GUARD creates an oleophobic and breathable chemical barrier, which protects stone materials. As a final step, in order to maintain the treatment, facilitate the cleaning and prevent the deposit of dirt from trampling, the LUXOR finish was applied on all the marble. LUXOR is an anti-wear finisher for granites, marbles and terrazzo that does not create a surface film but saturates the microporosity of the material. Today, with great pride and emotion, we are pleased to present the results of this complex project of recovery of polychrome marble, which now shine in their natural beauty. At the end of the treatment, the marble looks pleasant and natural, protected and the wonderful bathrooms are ready to be admired and used by customers of the Residenza d’Epoca B&B in Piazza della Signoria.
