Recovering old cement instead of replacing them is important for several reasons, from their historical significance, in some cases, to a positive contribution in terms of environmental impact, since recovering and reusing the old cement reduces the demand, helping to preserve the sources.
The old tiles, then, have a unique style, not replicable with the new ones and their recovery is certainly a cheaper solution than their replacement.
This month, not before we focused on the history of ancient cement and how, in general, can be recovered, we will see how the company specialized in the treatment of stone materials Pippolo, which has been operating for over thirty years in the Tosco-Emiliano, has carried out an extraordinary work of recovery of a bath in glossy black cement.
Ancient cement, a dip in history
Antique cement tiles are handmade tiles made with a mixture of cement, sand and pigment. They were first introduced in Europe in the 19th century and were popularized in the United States in the early 20th century.
These tiles are known for their unique and colorful designs, created by pressing different colored pigments into a mold until the desired pattern is formed. The tiles are then compressed under a hydraulic press and allowed to dry before being cured in water. This process creates a durable tile with a characteristic matte finish.
Old cement tiles were commonly used in homes and buildings from the early 1900s to the mid-20th century and can still be found in many historic houses and buildings today. They are often used in entrances, kitchens and bathrooms and can be found in a wide range of designs and patterns, from simple geometric shapes to intricate floral patterns.
How to recover ancient cement
The recovery of old cement involves the restoration of the original appearance and functionality. The main general steps to recover old cement are:
- cleaning the tiles, by removing dirt and debris. To carry out it it is recommended to use a soft bristle brush and a mild detergent, gently rubbing the surface and then rinsing it with clean water;
- the repair of any damage such as cracks or chipping, using a compound for cement patches, then smoothing the surface with a spatula;
- the finishing of the tiles, once they are dry, with sealing, polishing or painting, as needed.
The recovery of ancient cement requires time and painstaking work to restore its beauty and functionality; an ideal task for a team of great professionals specialized in the treatment of stone materials, such as those of the team of the company Pippolo.
The recovery of a glossy black cement bath
At the time of intervention by these expert craftsmen the material was opaque by use and corroded by acidic substances.
First, therefore, the material has been micro sanded using the product KW STAR with single brush and white disc, so as to uniformize the surface and remove corrosion, and then treat the surface with the mixture of products OIL WET and DILUOIL, in a report of a part of OIL WET in two parts of DILUOIL.
Thanks to this treatment the result obtained is that of the enhancement of the black color of the material of these cement tiles and the future protection from stains and wear.
