Nicola’s advice: how to clean and maintain the parquet

22 September 2021

Here we are again talking about a topic that is dear to many of you: the care of parquet.

Last April I asked you if you were taking care of your parquet in the right way, giving you some suggestions on the matter, but the requests on its maintenance and cleaning continue to arrive.

For this reason I have decided to collect some of the most frequent questions here, naturally hoping to be of help to all the people who are writing to me.

How to clean the various types of parquet from foot traffic, domestic use, micro-scratches and stains

Before going into the questions on how to clean and maintain the parquet, I remind you that if you have other questions you can write to contatti@marbec.it. In fact, this monthly appointment is intended to be an opportunity to satisfy your requests relating to the cleaning, recovery and maintenance of surfaces.

And now space for your questions (and my answers) on the subject!

How to clean and keep the parquet from being walked on and from domestic use?

The first question I give space to is among the most frequent: ‘Hi Nicola, my name is Martina and I would like to ask you how I can clean and keep the parquet from being walked on and from domestic use. Thanks!’

Thanking Martina for the question, I first suggest cleaning it with a detergent that does not attack either the finish or the wood essence.

At this point you can apply a maintenance wax such as BEAUTY FLOOR or BEAUTY FLOOR OPACO in order to create a protective screen to the wood finish, thus preventing the paint from consuming and the wood from becoming gray.

Doing this maintenance operation (to be repeated every 6-12 months) is essential to maintain the aesthetic and protective characteristics of the initial treatment and the alternative to what is suggested would be to discard the parquet and start over with the painting.

An onerous and inconvenient operation that is definitely better to avoid!

How to keep polished and matte parquet floors clean

Another question, again on the theme of parquet, comes to me from Mario. ‘Good morning Nicola, I am struggling with cleaning my polished parquet at home. I wanted to ask you how I can clean it (and keep it clean!). Thanks in advance for the advice you can give me!’.

To Mario I answer that, for his case, the product to use is PULIBRILL, the specific detergent for wooden surfaces and floors, perfect for both ordinary and extraordinary cleaning, to which you can add BEAUTY FLOOR (to be passed on the surface every 6 -12 months) for the fundamental maintenance of the work done.

In replying to Mario, I partly answer also to Vanessa who instead asked me how to ‘clean and keep my matte parquet clean’.

I also recommend to Vanessa the use of PULIBRILL to combine (in this case) with the specific BEAUTY FLOOR OPACO, to be subsequently rubbed on the surface every 6-12 months.

But what if the parquet is marked by micro-scratches?

‘Hi Nicola, I’m Elena and I am writing to you because I would like to’ refresh ‘my parquet slightly marked by the passing of the years. Thank you very much for your advice. ‘

Once again the PULIBRILL detergent comes to the rescue. Since this is an extraordinary cleaning, I recommend to Elena, first of all, to dilute one part of the product in a quantity of hot water varying from one to four parts.

With the use of WHITE BUFFER, therefore, I suggest Elena to rub well between the joints and into the pore of the wood, then rinse the surface with clean water and then move on to the finish.

The finish can be done with LIGNOLIFE, specific for varnished parquet. It is a product that allows you to restore the type of surface that interests Elena and is a carnauba wax emulsion.

It is sufficient to spread it with a sponge, a cloth or fleece spreader, applying a first coat, which dries within about 2-3 hours, and then proceed with a second; through LIGNOLIFE, scratches will be eliminated, restoring shine to the floor.

Last but not least the request from Francesco who asks me how to remove a tannin and rust stain created by a radiator leak on the parquet.

Remove stains from the parquet

‘Hi Nicola, thanking you for the advice you give every month, I wanted to submit one of my problems. My parquet was damaged by a leaking radiator. Stains have formed. How can I do to remedy? Francis.’

In the meantime, I suggest to Francesco to get the stain remover SMACCHIO LEGNO, pouring a small amount on the affected area, then spreading it with a sponge, wiping it with WHITE BUFFER and finally wiping the surface with absorbent paper. Finally rinse.

After a few minutes you can admire the result: the parquet is back as before, with the stain representing only a bad memory!

Also this month the space dedicated to my advice ends here. I really hope I have been useful to you but if you have any other questions regarding the cleaning and restoration of the parquet (but not only!) do not hesitate to write to me.

Reading and answering you, hoping to be useful, gives me great satisfaction.

Greetings and see you next month!

Nicola
